At San Antonio Pediatric & Adolescent Neuropsychology Specialists (SAPANS), we provide comprehensive neuropsychological and psychological evaluations for individuals ages 4 to 24. Our goal is to understand each child’s cognitive, academic, emotional, and behavioral functioning to provide meaningful recommendations that support their success at home, school, and in the community.
A neuropsychological evaluation is an in-depth assessment of brain functioning and how it relates to learning, behavior, and emotions. These evaluations help diagnose and provide recommendations for:
Attention and Executive Functioning Difficulties (e.g., ADHD, organization, problem-solving)
Learning Disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia)
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Intellectual Disabilities and Developmental Delays
Memory and Processing Speed Challenges
Medical and Neurological Conditions (e.g., epilepsy, brain injury, genetic syndromes)
Emotional and Behavioral Concerns (e.g., anxiety, mood disorders, school avoidance)
These assessments go beyond identifying a diagnosis—they provide a detailed profile of strengths and areas for growth, guiding individualized interventions for school accommodations, therapy, and support services.
Our evaluations follow a structured, step-by-step process to ensure a comprehensive understanding of each individual’s needs:
Intake Appointment – Parents meet with the provider (in-office or virtually) to discuss concerns, developmental and medical history, and academic background. The provider may briefly meet with the child (longer for older adolescents). Parents complete questionnaires, and preliminary impressions are discussed.
Testing Sessions – The child completes one to two testing sessions (2–5 hours each), which include:
Standardized cognitive, academic, and neuropsychological tests
Assessments of memory, attention, language, and executive functioning
Emotional and behavioral measures through questionnaires completed by parents, teachers (if applicable), and the child/adolescent
Feedback Appointment – Once all testing is completed and questionnaires are received, a feedback session is scheduled to discuss findings, diagnoses (if applicable), and individualized recommendations.
Comprehensive Report – A detailed written report is provided after the feedback session, once all insurance claims and payments have been finalized. This report includes test results, diagnostic impressions, and evidence-based recommendations for home, school, and therapeutic interventions.
For out-of-town or out-of-state patients, we offer a single-day evaluation model, where intake and testing occur on the same day. A brief feedback discussion is provided at the end of the session, and the full report is completed in the following weeks after all data is reviewed.
In addition to neuropsychological assessments, we offer psychological evaluations on a case-by-case basis, typically when a co-occurring medical condition is present. Psychological evaluations focus on:
Emotional and behavioral concerns (e.g., depression, anxiety, trauma)
Personality and psychological functioning
Diagnostic clarification for mental health conditions
Unlike neuropsychological evaluations, psychological evaluations do not include comprehensive cognitive and academic testing. Instead, they focus on emotional and behavioral factors through:
Clinical interviews
Standardized psychological questionnaires
Self-report, parent-report, and teacher-report measures
We consider psychological evaluations when there is a specific need to assess emotional and behavioral functioning alongside medical or neurodevelopmental concerns.
